HOKKAIDO NISEKO CHALLENGING

HOKKAIDO NISEKO CHALLENGING

Hokkaido is the northernmost island of Japan. With its vast land space and relatively cool and dry weather during summer, Hokkaido is an ideal playground for cyclists. On this 5 days 4 nights trip, we explore the southwestern part of Hokkaido around Niseko and the surrounding areas. A majority of our rides is in Shikotsu Toya National Park. You will be riding around pristine crater lakes, on quiet mountain roads, and through rustic pastures and fields. Hokkaido is also home to great food and onsens (natural hot spring baths). Accommodations are varied from authentic ryokan (Japanese-style inn), to deluxe Japanese- and Western-style hotels. Most of our inns have excellent onsens.

Trip Itinerary

  • Day 1 : Noboribetsu Onsen Spa (Ride distance: 99km)
We meet at the Shin-Chitose Airport in the morning, and start riding out of the nearby Chitose train station. We follow a quiet cycle path that leads to Lake Shikotsu-ko - Japan’s second-deepest lake formed by volcanic activity more than 40,000year ago. After a short break to adore spectacular views of the surrounding mountains over crystal clear water, we enjoy nice and smooth descent to the city of Tomakomai and have lunch. Then we ride west towards Noboribetsu Onsen, the most preeminent hot spring resort in Hokkaido. We spend the first night of the tour in a Japanese-style hotel. You can soak in abundant hot spring water and relax – perfect way to prepare yourself for another day of riding. (Dinner included)
  • Day 2 : Lake Toya (Ride distance: 72km)
After a casual morning stroll to the Jigokudani (Hell Valley) to see many types of hot spring water surfaces, we start the day with a challenging climb on a scenic road to the Orofure Pass. At 930 meters above sea level on a clear day, we can see a magnificent view of the Pacific Ocean, Lake Kuttara, Lake Toya and Mount Yotei. Then we descend to Lake Toya, a picturesque crater lake with islets. After lunch we take a ropeway (aerial cable car) to Mount Usu to see its live craters and the remains produced by volcano eruption. Tonight, we stay at a quiet western-style hotel by Lake Toya. (Breakfast and dinner included)
  • Day 3 :Niseko Konbu Onsen Spa (Ride distance: 86km)
Today we head north to the Niseko area, and ride through picturesque farmlands and past cows grazing in the pastures. We eventually ride around foothills of Mt. Yotei (typically known as Ezo Fuji meaning Mt.Fuji of Hokkaido) enjoying magnificent views of the conical mountain peak and surrounding fields and ranches. En route we stop by Fukidashi Park to cool down with its famous spring water. Tonight we stay in Konbu Onsen spa at a very traditional Japanese-style inn (ryokan) which has an excellent onsen bath. There is no private en suite bath or toilet at this inn. If you require a private bathroom, we can arrange an alternative accommodation with en suite bath nearby for a supplemental charge. Please inquire at the time of booking. (Breakfast and dinner included)
  • Day 4 : Niseko Higashiyama (Ride distance: 77km)
We ride a large loop around Niseko mountains including Niseko Annupuri and Chisenupuri. Our route today is hilly with several passes, but shows us spectacular views of mountains, dense forests and pastures. We take a lunch break at beautiful Shinsen-numa marsh. Tonight we stay at a luxurious western-style hotel in Niseko. (Breakfast and dinner included)
  • Day 5
Following breakfast, you will be escorted to the Shin-Chitose Airport by a van. It is time to say good bye to the guide. You can catch an afternoon flight for your next destination.
